Dad

Last night I was going through some of my Army papers. I reviewed my Officer Evaluation Reports remembering some of the major events of my career. I was surprised by how much I mis-remembered or skewed some of the realities. But one thing that really stood out was that the later happenings were definitely better than the former ones. I noticed how I had matured and refined my basic skills so that I was able to perform better in life’s game and feel better about myself. Early on I thought I was doing better, but in reality I was new and green at the drama of life. Over the years I have beat myself up over a number of missteps that I took. Now I understand that given the circumstances I did not do so badly. I just was not capable at the time to handle those experiences as I might do now. I am grateful for all of them for they have been the building blocks for the platform of life where I now stand. And where I am now feels very good. I truly believe that ALL THINGS can be for our good if we learn for them and allow Christ to heal the pains that occasionally injure us.

Today I thumbed through a number of old photos of your life. I think that the life of a 1st born in a parent’s eyes, is somewhat different from any of the rest of the children. All of the plans, hopes and dreams come together in the birth of this special one. When I look at you, I review my own life and measure it against what I had hoped for. I look at your happy face in the crib, the 7 year old when we first moved to Emmett, an eighth grade graduate, a high school beauty, a dancer, a college graduate, a recreational therapist, a grad school student, a loving aunt and sister – my heart fills with gratitude for the good person that you are and for what you have accomplished. I have full confidence in your future happiness and success. You bless all with whom you associate and most of all the lives of your parents.
Happy Birthday!
